WWII and Korean War Purple Heart Veteran Reinterred in Arlington National Cemetery

Sgt. Duncan Norman Daugherty was truly a soldier’s soldier who finally received his deserved place of rest as a hero among other heroes at Arlington National Cemetery.  He had been buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Detroit, Michigan since his death in 1951 and was disinterred by Detroit Wilbert Vault Corporation on July 25, 2019 for reinterment at Arlington.

Duncan Daugherty was born on August 6, 1922 as the middle child of six and his family moved to Detroit when he was young.  He enlisted in the Army as World War II was underway and was soon chosen for his intellect, stamina and strength to be a part of the newly formed 2nd Ranger Battalion, then based in Camp Nathan Bedford Forest outside of Tullahoma, Tennessee.  The Battalion, trained in advanced combat, amphibious warfare, and German and Japanese weapons and tactics, was sent to France to take part in the D-Day Invasion.  Sgt. Daugherty was on one of the amphibious ducks when he was seriously wounded from a bullet in the chest that collapsed a lung.  He recovered and rejoined his Battalion, later fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.  For his service in WWII, he received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

Sgt. Daugherty wasn’t yet done with his dedication to his country as he re-enlisted during the Korean War where he was Killed in Action by mortar fire on February 15, 1951 while engaging the enemy in combat near Kokchon, South Korea.  At only 28 years old, Sgt. Duncan Daugherty received a Purple Heart posthumously for the ultimate sacrifice of his life.

Sgt. Daugherty’s family was grateful that he was finally laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery and gave their permission to share his story and photos of the disinterment with the Wilbert Licensee network.

Disinterment_3With Kaul Funeral Home overseeing the disinterment, Graham MacLeod’s team at Detroit Wilbert disinterred the asphalt-lined concrete vault.  As shown in the photos, the contents were dry.Disinterment_1

While Graham and his team were proud of the integrity of the Wilbert vault and the protection that it provided, they were most proud to play a role in relocating a hero to his final place of honor.
